7 Matching Sins (2010)
project by Patti & Malé
'7 Matching Sins' is a domino game made of matchboxes and a website.
The traditional domino numerology is replaced by the imagery of the seven deadly sins. Each box mocks graphically an ordinary matchbox, but the top face is divided into two parts: one with an image of females representing each sin, laying in a matchbox as if in a coffin; the other image is a text that describes another of the seven sins. The aim of the game is to match the image with the text. The aesthetics plays with humour and seduction, creating a playful, intriguing sensation. The usual meaning of the matchbox and a domino is confused and challenges the audience to recreate a new meaning.
The installation is set in different places, including bars or cafes, art spaces, friends and family circles. The players are challenged to make their own use of the installation, and to create their own meaning. The narrative is any response of the users, even if they do not play dominoes, but take the boxes, make “constructions”, or do not react at all. The players' responses are secretly observed, and when they establish their own game politics, they are asked for permission to take a picture, and discuss their experience. The people are expected to take a box of matches with them, as an invitation to the blog listed on the matchbox.
The blog describes a fictional account of the Secret Society of the Seven Matching Sins Game, with a brief summary of its history and a society manifesto. Another section exhibits pictures shown on the boxes. The central part of the blog is dedicated to the records of the experiences of the installations, and a space for users' feedback.
